network + sql backup file copy to another server

Trying to understand this from a n/w perspective.
We have multiple backup files that we try and copy(copy, xcopy or robocopy)
to a secondary server thats Gig attached on the same LAN. When we issue one
DOS Session to start copying an individual file, why doesnt it use the
entire throughput of the NIC ...as an example, the bytes sent/sec might be
say 2000000, when we invoke another session and start copying another file,
the bytes sent/sec now jumps to say around 3500000. So my question is why
with one DOS Session, it does not push at 3500000 . Is there a DOS
Limitation ? Trying to understand the n/w concepts here. The numbers I have
listed are not accurate but always noticed a major increase when multiple
sessions are opened for the file copying..
I know this is not a SQL Server related question but any help here would be
appreciated from the experts hereHassan,
There may be other limiting factors than the network bandwith. For instance
you have the Disk I/O, the controller's channel and bus bandwidth, cpu etc.
If the file being read from a single thread or in parallel? I would check
perfmon to ensure you don't have other bottlenecks affecting the tests.

when i open more and start copying other files, it increases and if i
cancel/close some sessions, i can see it decrease and was wondering why one
session cant take it all at first and if I open more DOS sessions, the rate
should remain the same ...

threaded and can't read as fast as the network can handle.

Net Send to multiple operator

I would like to send the Alerts to multiple operators for my SQL Server. I waas wondering that is it possible to send it to multiple operator? No its not possible in the case of using NET SEND.
Instead approach email about job process intimation.|||In your Alert in the Response tab just check the multiple operators you want to net send.|||you can send to everyone in the domain by using an asterisk instead of the username or computername
but (i just tried) you cannot send to a global group.sql

Net Send notifications

Is it possible to specify multiple Net Send addresses when creating new
operator?
Is it possible to specify multiple Email addresses?
Thank you in advance for your help,
Leon Shargorodsky
Hi
Not sure about net send (in general I think this is now off by default
nowadays!)
I believe you can create an operator that has multiple email addresses or
alternatively you can specify multiple operators to notify.
You may find that a better solution (my preference!) is to create a
distribution list and create an operator for that.

nested joins - joining one table to another multiple times

Hi,

I'm having problems constructing a nested join. It's quite complex, so
here's a simplfied example of the problem. Any thoughts on what I'm
doig wrong - or if I've got the whole approach wrong are welcome.

I've two tables :-

one is a contact table contacting name, addresses etc. Three of the
fields represent users - 'created by', 'last modified by' and 'owner'.
They contain usernames - eg. JDOE, BSMITH etc.

The other table contants usernames and new ID codes.

What I want to do is create a new dataset by joining the contacts table
with the user table on all three fields - so the new dataset contains
the ids for the creator, last modifier and owner.

I've tried things similar to:

select c.*, u1.id, u2,id, u3.id
from contact c
left outer join users u1
left outer join users u2
left outer join users u3
on (u3.username = c.owner)
on (u2.username = c.modified)
on (u1.username = c.creator )

But it compains that
"The column prefix 'c' does not match with a table name or alias name
used in the query."

The problem is referencing c (contact) through the whole set of joins.

I would like to do this in some similar format as the query is within a
cursor and post-processing would be very long-winded.

ThanksHi Steve,

this sql-code will work:

select c.*, u1.id, u2.id, u3.id
from contact c
left outer join users u1 ON u1.username = c.creator
left outer join users u2 ON u2.username = c.modified
left outer join users u3 ON u3.username = c.owner

Need View to return "NULL" values

I have a view that is joining multiple tables. How do I modify this view so
that it also returns when the value is "NULL" for some of the join table
fields?
Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!
Thank you,

instructions. This is probably what you want.
The use of an UNION query can also be usefull for this kind of problem.

Fileds and columns are different; one of the MANY differences is that a
column can have a NULL. You probably want an OUTER JOIN, but what you
posted looks wrong from a design viewpoint. If we had DDL we could
more.
1) What is a "medication_id" -- don't you have an industry standard
drug code? I seem to remember that such a thing exists.
2) What makes "medication_id" in medication a totally different thing
from a "patient_m=ADedication_id"? You never, never give the same
data elements different names in the same schema. And doing by
physical storage locations is really bad.
3) Why are units of measuresment modeled as entities and not
attributes? Do you see a gram walking around, independent of an
entity? Unless units of time and medication change independently and
frequently, they ought to be part of the dosage, not entities. You
might want to a add a CHECK() constrint to the DDL to assure this
attribute is correct.
4) Did you actually use an 'y/n' flag in SQL like we did with punch
cards? Remember the rule about storing computed data values? Do not
do it.
5) Can you explain the logical differences between a
"duration=AD_unit_id" and mere "duration=AD_unit" (ditto dosage)? If
you read any book on data modeling or ISO-11179 that first name is
absurd. An identifier gives you unique entity and unit is a scale for
an attribute; entities are not attributes.
6) Why do you have duration, start and discontinue times in the table?
You can compute duration, can't you?|||Thank you! The LEFT OUTER JOIN was exactly what I needed. You have made my
day. :-)
Thanks again,
Valerie

which are already taken into consideration with our current data model.
